Chapter Three: Held Hostage
And so the days pasted slowly; the two cubs attending each class with joy. Today, Spectrum was in her second class of Electricity Arts, whereas Moon was at home, preparing for her first class of Time Wandering. Bloodfang always enjoyed listening to their stories of when they arrived home again, Spectrum always having more to say. 'Is Moon jealous?' he often thought to himself.

"Today's lesson," Madison began; her fur was such a beautiful gold, and her eyes sparked bright green. "Is how to strike at a target, with good aim. Although the lightning power often finds its way to its enemies, you are still to learn how to keep the electric charge flowing. So I will give you each a target," she was saying, as she gathered a few masses of grass, each folded in some kind of leather with a target painted in elk's blood; she placed them about three metres away from each cub's face. The training yard was set in a long field, around the borders of the Edge. Spectrum found it incredibly easy to charge the electricity, perhaps from her bright and energetic personality. She stared at the masses of grass with so much intent and focus, preparing an aim.

"Now, students, charge the lightning," Madison instructed them, and the cubs each began to charge the lightning, a small orb appearing before their mouths. Spectrum's orb was larger than the rest, burning with more intensity. Nevertheless, Madison didn't congratulate her, for she believed that every cub could set it off if they really gave it their all. She assumed that the cubs were equals; no competition here.

"…Strike!" she shouted, and each orb vanished, only to be replaced by a vicious fork of electricity. Spectrum's fork shot straight for the target, its aim perfectly straight. Some pup's lightning forks didn't hit their targets, others did. The bag holding the grass in front of Spectrum unfolded and the grass whooshed where it was, then fell to the stony ground.

"Congratulations, students!" she squealed with delight, and some of the cubs looked down at their paws in disappointment. "To everyone." She put in, and the saddened cubs looked straight up again. "Alright, students," she said, and the cubs knew immediately what she meant, that it was time to go; and scurried on to their homes, saying, "Thankyou, Mage Madison!" Spectrum however, stayed right where she was, silent.

"Good job, dear," the mage said, escorting the young she-wolf to her next training.
"Thankyou, Mage Madison." Spectrum had said.
"You're welcome. Remember, tomorrow at sundown." Madison reminded her.
Spectrum nodded, and walked to her first class with Remedy.

The moon was in a sharp crescent, spotted with foggy clouds. Moon had arrived at her first class of Time Wandering with happiness and excitement. As she peeked in the underground cavern; her eyes glowed with amazement. The walls of the cavern were beautifully polished; decorated with coins, feathers, a portrait of an elderly she-wolf, and above a warm blaze of fire sat antlers of an elk. In the middle of the eerily stunning room was a huge, towering hourglass, and right beside it was a pool of glistening water. The water seemed strangely welcoming with its deep, clear blue colour. At the floor of the pool was what Moon thought was a clock. Why was it ticking in such a place? Why was it not on the walls? Nevertheless, Moon continued to look around. She saw a gap in the ceiling of the cavern; from it, a bright, gleaming light shined against the hourglass. And in the cavern was another room, what looked a lot like a bedroom. It had books of age piled up on the floors and in the bookshelves, some of the books open with scribbles and notes around the edges of the writing. A finely woven dream-catcher hung beside a bed, a bed made of twigs and grass. Moon walked back to the hourglass and touched the bright, shiny glass. And in the shadow of the hourglass lingered a she-wolf with lavender-grey fur and a warm, brown eye, the other a gaping hole. "Enjoying the scenery are we?" She bluntly asked.

"I was just looking around. It's absolutely wonderful here," Moon smiled at the she-wolf. "And who are you? And am I the only student here?" She asked, looking around. There seemed to be no wolf cubs here, except for herself.

"Thank you. I am Beth. Time-walker. For years I've been trained to walk the hours, minutes and seconds of the clock. And I will teach you how." Beth barked in a strange tone, ignoring the young wolf cub's question.
"And how do I travel time?" Moon politely asked.
"You fool!" Beth snarled, "It takes years to learn how to even open up a warp to the world of time!" then suddenly, her voice was peaceful, "Today, young cub, you will learn the hours of day." And she picked Moon up by the scruff and dropped her to the pool of water. Beth continued, "This, my dear," holding up the clock, "Is the answer. It tells us the time. It tells us how far we are in the day. What hour," she pointed at a hand, "minute," a longer hand, "and second we are in," pointing at a slim, even longer hand.
"Now, these are called numbers." Beth nosed at some strange symbols on the wall. "Can you tell me what hour they are? And why is there only twelve on the wall?"
"Um…there are only twelve because they are the main hours?" Moon asked, hoping she was right, not knowing what a 'twelve' was.

"Sort of. There are twelve hours on the analog clock, and twenty-four in all throughout the day. One, Two, Three, Four," Beth began to list, "Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven and…" she looked at Moon expectantly.
"…twelve?" she asked.
"Yes, Moon!" Beth smiled.
'This is so boring.' thought Moon.
And as time passed, no matter how dull it got for her, she learnt the hours of the clock. She learnt the numbers, seconds, hours, and she now knew what a 'twelve' was. Even though Beth was rough and had a pushy personality, she was still a nice she-wolf. Moon knew that life wouldn't always be entertaining for her; that things would be have to be dreary sometimes.

It was rising to morning now, and the forest was asleep. Few animals were beginning to awaken, while others slept the day away. A small group of wolves were nosing about on the ground, stopping now and then to look for any signs of danger. It was Sin and his group, continuing their journey. The black wolf was walking about, his ears pricked.
"Now," he told them, "We're in the rogue wolves' stronghold, and we must remain alert."
The wolves nodded their heads before a loud crow's call echoed off the mountain walls along with a heavy flutter of wings.

"What's going on?" Fang called out in shock.
"It's an alarm call," Bless told him, "Seems like we aren't the only ones awake."
The wolves were about to continue walking, when a howl flew in the distance.
"Oh, no," June shook violently, "I think they've discovered us."
And out of an opening of rocks, three wolves scurried to them.
"Fight them," Sin snarled, "Fight them back."

And Fang and June leaped off their paws to the strangers. The wolves flinched, and stopped with their tails between their legs. "Wait!" cried one of them.
Fang and June halted, but were still snarling violently.
"We're not one of them!" cried another.
"Hold on, you're not what?" Sin called from the distance.
"Those rogue packs. We're not them!" cried a young female.
"We were being held hostage," she told them, "By the Blood Army."
Sin and Bless bolted to their group, and Sin pushed a male down, snarling.
"Liars!" he hissed, and then softened a little, "Tell us your names."
The female looked frightened by Sin's aggressive nature, and whined quietly, "I'm Leaf. That's Oliver," she moved her head to a young, brownish-red wolf, and that's my younger brother, Fragile. He was named that by The Blood because…well," Fragile's small body and face was covered with scars. "He…he was attacked because he was weak, and the pack hates him. They use him like a punching bag."

"Hold on," Bless barked, "I thought the rogues took only females and cubs."
Oliver nodded, "Yes, that's right. Fragile was just a cub when he was stolen."
Fragile whined, "Please…help us…"
"It's okay, brother," Leaf nuzzled him, "He gets easily shaken when wolves talk to him, being with those rogues has made him so very shy and frail."
Fragile whined again, "Look what they did to me. Look at my ears! My face!" and then he shuddered, "Please, take us with you."
"Sin," Bless said gently to her mate, "We can't turn a weak wolf down. These scars are a bit of proof. We must take them in."

Sin growled, "There's a slight flaw in that plan. I would like to know why Oliver is a full grown. This pack has only been around for about half a year, right?"
Oliver nodded to him, "I understand that. Don't worry. I was raised with The Blood. I was one of the rogues that started out in it."
Sin snarled, "Then you stay behind!"

"No, you don't understand!" Leaf cried. "He hates them now, loathes their ways. He would never betray us."

Bless understood, "Alright. I see. You may join us, all of you. The only thing is–"
"We're taking you with us to the rogues," Sin interrupted, "We are a high-ranking pack from The Edge, and we have something to sort out with these rogues."
"The Edge!?" Leaf winced, "You're the Element Force! They can save us!"
Bless closed her eyes, "That may not be entirely true. We might be able to save you. But why, though? Why are you running away?"

Oliver said in a low tone, "Because we were going to be executed by The Blood. It was our only choice, to run away and become rogues or join a pack."
"E-executed?" June shrieked.

"Yes," Leaf told them, "When the Blood figured that Oliver was betraying them, they set up an execution. Fragile and I told them what they were doing was wrong, and they set an execution for us as well. We ran away, and Oliver fought them back. When they were weakened, he bolted to us and became our guardian. From that day, we became known as hostages."

"Hostages?" Fang asked, "What do you mean?"
"A-another group of wolves called the Lynx Slayers, are guards of The Blood. They never let us out." Fragile whimpered.

"So you wanted and prayed that another wolf group would help you out?" Fang assumed.
"Correct." Leaf smiled. "We hoped that somebody was going to save us. And our prayers from to Dawn and Dusk have been answered. Thankyou."
Bless nuzzled Leaf, "You're welcome."
"Alright. Leaf, Fragile and Oliver, you are now on our side." Sin barked, "I will hold up our mission so we can go back and fight the Lynx Slayers off, so you can go free."
