Chapter Two: Dark Shadows
The trio returned to the den; Moon was a little nervous, but Spectrum was sitting, her chest puffed up in pride.

"Moon," Bloodfang told his niece, alerting her, "Your elements are darkness and time," Moon sat back up, smiling. "You'll be under the teachings of Nightowl, the darkness mage, and Beth, the mage of time." Spectrum nudged her sister proudly; Moon pushing her away.

"And you, Spectrum," he continued, "You have three elements, which is very uncommon. But I'm glad to say that you got that gift from your parents, they mastered five elements at once!" Spectrum's eyes sparkled as he mentioned their parents. "Your elements are poison, electricity and darkness as well."

Spectrum nudged her uncle's paws, "But why darkness? Darkness is bad."
"Because, my dear," Violetta spoke for Bloodfang, "That is what Dawn and Dusk has chosen for you and your sister. And darkness isn't all bad; see, without darkness, there'd be no light. Without light, there'd be no darkness."

"And darkness isn't just cruelty and hatred..." he assured his nieces, "It's also the way of the moon, the way of the night, and stars..."
"The way of the wolf." Violetta said strongly.

After the realization, Spectrum eagerly asked her uncle, "...and my mentors?"
"Your mentors will be Madison, the electricity mage, Remedy, the poison mage," Bloodfang listed, "And lastly, you'll be paired with your sister in the darkness class under Nightowl."

"I can't wait! When do we start?" Spectrum cheered.
"Today, my niece," He answered.

In a circle sat a group of cubs, Jay, Lucy, Spectrum and Moon, and a couple of others that Spectrum didn't know the name of. In the middle, was a smoky-black she-wolf with luminous violet eyes. "Welcome, young ones, to the element of darkness. The empty blackness is nothing to be feared, dears. You will learn how to shroud minds into the night, how to conceal the light within. My full name is Madame Nightowl, but I am mostly just called Night."

"I already know that..." Lucy whispered; Jay elbowing her in the rib.
"And what will be do with darkness, mum?" said Jay, a greyish male pup.

"The very hold of darkness will be hard to control at first, my son." Nightowl answered, "So today, I will be teaching how to cast it. To summon it." And she placed down a pile of sticks.

"Darkness works like fire. It can sometimes burn out every last hope. All you have to do is extinguish it." And out of nowhere, the pile of sticks burned with a black, sparking fire. What made Moon's eyes gleam was the beautiful purple in the middle. "And that, my dears, is darkness."

Soon enough, Nightowl was teaching the cubs how to cast it. Each cub had a pile of sticks placed out in front of them, and the task was to light the sticks. Jay was doing superbly, he lit it in about three tries. Lucy, his sister, wasn't doing so well. It was about seven times she tried to light it. Spectrum lit it in six tries, and Moon; four. Nightowl was giving out instructions and tips.

"Keep your eyes steady, Lucy. And keep your paws on the sticks."
Lucy nodded positively, "I know I can do it, mother."

"And you will." Nightowl told her, "Just continue to stare at the sticks. Think about the night sky. Think about Dusk's great howl to the moon...think about the power of the wolf! It can only be summoned if you believe it will."

Lucy stared into the bundle of sticks intently, then there was silence. And in five seconds, a small dark flame burned. "Well done, Lucy!" Madame Night shouted, "Lucy's done it!"
Some of the cubs congratulated her, while others, like Moon, were keeping quiet.

"Alright, dears, time to go to your families now." Nightowl smiled. "You all did wonderfully."

"Thankyou for the lesson." Lucy mumbled, shyly snuggling her mother's fur.
"You're most welcome," she happily replied, "You were just like me when I was a cub."
"Really?" Lucy flinched, "You always told me you were the best of the best!"
"Oh, no, dear," Nightowl remembered, "It took more tries than you to get it lit. But in time, I focused on the sticks, on every detail, looking many times at the fire that my mentor had lit. I didn't give up. I continued to focus. As if the only things that were in that cavern were me and those sticks. And, just like that, a huge flame sparked from the wood. I've never been happier than that in my life. I became good at it. I practiced every night on casting, aiming, until I became the new mentor of the Darkness Arts."

"Wow," Lucy nudged against Nightowl's front legs, "Thankyou, mum. That helped me so much."

"It was my pleasure, Lucy." Nightowl nudged her shoulders. Lucy trotted off; bumping into Moon heftily. Moon snarled a little high-pitched snarl. Nightowl walked up to Moon, Lucy running home in the distance.

"Moon, dear." Nightowl told her, "You are like your parents in every way. You have so much passion to become a skilled mage. And you will in time. But I'll tell you this. The other wolf cubs have only one element, whereas you have two and your sister, three. Life will be harder for you. You'll be starting with Darkness Arts with me, then seeing my cousin, Beth, in Time Wandering. And Spectrum will have to work even harder. I hope you don't trip over yourself and practice to your limits. Promise me, you won't tire yourself out."

Moon looked sadly at Nightowl, for Darkness to her seemed so interesting, so wonderfully beautiful. But she smiled, and shook Nightowl's paw, "I promise."

"Good," Nightowl nodded thankfully. "Now your uncle will have some food for you; go home now, dear." And with one last glance at her mentor, Moon ran off to her cavern, whilst Nightowl turned back toward her den, gathering supplies and notes for tommorrow's lesson.

Bloodfang picked up a chunk of meat, and tossed it to Spectrum, then tore off another chunk; rolling it to Moon. "Thanks, uncle Bloodfang." and began to chew.
"Is something bothering you?" Spectrum asked, "You seem sad."
"Oh, no, I'm fine. I just need some rest." Moon answered.

"So how was Darkness Arts today?" Bloodfang asked, "What did Madame Nightowl teach you?" Moon continued eating, but Spectrum sat up and grinned.

"She taught us how light a dark flame." She said, "I had trouble lighting it at first, until I finally got it."

"You weren't as bad as June, though." Moon laughed.
"Yeah," Spectrum falsely agreed, "But you lit it before I did! You'll probably be better at Darkness Arts than me."

Violetta nuzzled her head in between Moon and Spectrum, "I'm sure you two will do just fine."
"After all," Bloodfang pointed out. "My brother was so very skilled, that you'll be the best in there."

"Tell us about our parents!" Spectrum got up from her paws, "Please?"
Moon blankly mumbled, "I don't really care if you do or don't."

Bloodfang looked at his mate with an unsure look on his face, Violetta nodding encouragingly without the nieces noticing.

"Alright," Bloodfang sighed, finishing his meal.

"Your parents are skilled mages. They knew everything there was to know about the elements they were given. Some say that Dawn granted Bless the power to see truth from lies, and go days without meals, and that Dusk gave Sin the gift to be a great alpha, with wisdom and strength—"
"But why are they gone?" Spectrum interrupted.
"I'll get to that, Spectrum. Just hold on." Bloodfang sighed.
"Alright. I'm sorry, uncle." Spectrum apologized.
"Continue." Moon asked.

"...Now, your parents led The Element Force for years now. But months ago, when the rogue packs in the Mountain Ridge began taking cubs and females from other packs; they were forced to make a stand. They left home, and went across the harsh lands of The Crackled Path, until they were made to rest there. Nobody, not even I, would know where they are now. Before they left, though, Bless made a promise, and Sin made a prayer. Bless promised that if she and the rest did not return within months, she would account me and your aunt as the new alphas."

"Which you both are now." Moon said.
"Yes; my brother though, prayed that Dawn and Dusk would watch over us, so the rogue packs don't lay a claw on you. And that, my nieces, is the end."

The moon had risen to the skies, its shape in a half now. Five wolves were scouting the ground, trying to pick up scents. "Alpha Sin," said a voice in the darkness, "We've looked all around the Path, and we haven't picked up a trace of the rogue wolves."
"And they haven't found us, either." barked another voice.

"I know, you two. But we will soon. I'm sure of it." Sin promised.
"You know," a feminine voice pointed out, "That we haven't eaten for what, a day? Come on, alpha, we're starved."

"Come on, dear." said a soft voice, "We are."

"Alright, Bless. Soldiers, let's hunt us out some rabbit carcass." Sin growled.
And the five wolves were off; sniffing out any trace of food. The air was empty now, no scent had been found. It all seemed hopeless. That was until a head rose from the searching group of wolves.

"Alpha Sin! I've picked up something!" shouted the first voice ecstatically.
"But I don't think it's rabbit. It smells like…lynx." sniffed the second soldier.
"That means that there is food around here!" Sin demanded. "Look for that lynx! Any trace at all!"

Suddenly, a loud explosive sound pierced the air. More than a few metres away, a heavily-coated man was hunting; grasping a gun in his cold, gloved hands.
"Get down, everyone!" Sin barked. When it was silent, he barked again, "Alright, everybody head for the mountains, no matter what the cost! We can't fail this mission!" Another gunshot pierced the air, and Bless crouched in horror.
"Alpha Sin!" cried out a soldier.

Sin bolted back to his group, seeking cover while more gunshots moved in his direction.
"No…" Bless wept. "This can't be."
"June, what—" Sin halted, and then looked down at his ally. "No…no! Bay!"
"He's been shot." June said sadly.
"There's no time to mourn him." Sin growled hastily, "We must head for the mountains now."
And the pack rushed into the trees with no warning, leaving behind the stiff, dark brown body of Bay.

The group was now well away from the hunter, and the wolves mourned Bay.
"Well…at least it was over quickly for him." June cried.
"But Dusk had already planned his death. It's too late now."
"Don't say that, Fang." snarled June. "It's not too late."
"That's right," barked Sin, "We are still on a mission. We cannot just give up."
Bless ran ahead, and then scented the air. "I smell…deer carcass. One day old, hasn't been touched. It might be poison."

"That's true," Fang ran up to her, "But it might not. We could smell it for any poison."
"Alright," Sin barked, bolting up to them, and June began to follow, "Bless, where is it?" and Bless nudged her mate happily, "It's right ahead." And before them, mountains stood high. They had made it to the rogue wolves. Now was the time for their senses to be on high alert. As they headed in the direction of the carcass, a pair of blood-hungry eyes watched them.
